The Effect of Color on Food

Hey bloggers! For this blog I will be creating an argument over how food and colors are correlated. To begin with, many colors and art enhance and stimulate food consumption. Here's a little background information: Egyptians were the original users of the color pallet. They used colors to study mood and accomplish holistic benefits. This got to Isaac Newton later on and he eventually discovered how the color spectrum is organized and published a paper on it. In 1809, Goethe created the color wheel to demonstrate how colors work together. Lastly, Angela Wright pursued a deeper understanding of the psychology of color which is an ongoing experiment. Colors have the ability to manipulate peoples' minds on their opinion on food. According to Yangjun Tu, the author and scientist of "Taste of Plate" states from his experiment that spicy food appears to be spicier when it is served on warmer colored plates. In the experiment, participants were given spicy food on warm colored plates (red and yellow) and on cool colored plies (green and white). In the academic article Effects of Light Color", an experiment is conducted in which participants were given apples and bell peppers under different colored lights. The participants found the food under the lighter colored lights more appealing. An objection for this reason may be that colors may be depicted differently in the minds of different people. Well, this may be true, but colors are psychological factors so the most common associations with each color are what the food companies use to lure their customers in. Another reason is that colors help with the sale of products. According to "Food Packaging Design", a study is performed in which colors attract people efficiently. This experiment pretty much proves that certain colors affect peoples' minds differently and enable food companies to have a leg up on their customers. Going back to the article about light color, it states that different restaurants use different colored lights to make the food and drinks more attractive. Next time you're in a fancy restaurant or bar, make sure to look at how these two settings are lit completely differently. Lastly, art and presentation of food can control willingness to try it. The "Food Packaging and Design" article states that a company can only survive the competition with its packaging. Packaging alone decides whether people are going to want to try it or not, so colors are extremely important. An objection to this may be "Why would art affect how people view their food?" Well, art stimulates the mind and makes people more attracted to nicer looking plates. Obviously, people would rather eat off of nicer, prepared meals rather than sloppy ones. In conclusion, the nicer the the plate looks and what colors are utilized effect how people view food.
